Sleeves Rolled Up is a podcast produced by The Salvation Army New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. While you may know The Salvation Army for our op shops or handing out food parcels, what you might not know is that we’re involved in so much more. Our strong social justice focus informs our work, work such as reintegrating people back into society after they are released from prison, building social housing communities, supporting people experiencing homelessness, advocating for social change at government level, releasing research papers about social issues, giving people a hand up through our wraparound services and so much more! In this episode of our Pathways and Politics series we interview Labour MP Naisi Chen about her pathways in life and faith, and her work in Parliament.
Naisi is the only MP of Chinese ethnicity currently in Parliament as well as being one of the youngest MPs. Describing herself as of the “1.5 Generation” she reflects on her identity as someone who came to Aotearoa New Zealand from China with her family as a young child, and her hopes to make sure that everyone has a voice in politics in this country.
