Sleeves Rolled Up is a podcast produced by The Salvation Army New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga and Samoa. While you may know The Salvation Army for our op shops or handing out food parcels, what you might not know is that we’re involved in so much more. Our strong social justice focus informs our work, work such as reintegrating people back into society after they are released from prison, building social housing communities, supporting people experiencing homelessness, advocating for social change at government level, releasing research papers about social issues, giving people a hand up through our wraparound services and so much more! We hope you enjoy listening to these interviews with our guests who are determined to see people’s lives transformed through their respective roles within The Salvation Army.

In this episode we chat to Salvation Army social policy analyst Paul Barber about the work and incomes section of the 2022 State of the Nation report.
We spoke to Paul about the effects the economy has had on low income and vulnerable households, the need for benefit levels to be looked at again and we touch some good news regarding overall employment levels.
State of the Nation is a report released each year by The Salvation Army (now in its 15th year), that tracks progress and decline of key wellbeing areas for communities across New Zealand. One of these key wellbeing areas is work and incomes.
ABOUT PAUL:
Paul has worked in the non-profit and social services sector for over 25 years, working on social policy issues with a focus on social justice and social transformation. Before joining SPPU in August 2019, he spent 15 years as a policy advisor with the NZ Council of Christian Social Services. His background is theological study with a focus on social ethics after earlier studying commerce and accountancy.
